Flood alert across UP after 12 die in a day 

At least 12 people have died in rain-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh in the past 24 hours.

The flood situation in Uttar Pradesh continues to disrupt normal life as most rivers have swelled up due to heavy rains in North India. At least 12 people have died in rain-related incidents in the state in the past 24 hours.

The government has issued a flood alert across the state till Thursday (September 6). "In the last 24 hours, 12 deaths were reported in Uttar Pradesh and over 300 houses damaged," said Relief Commissioner Sanjay Kumar.

He said the administration is ensuring that compensation is provided to all affected people. Kanpur has been witnessing regular rainfall over the past two days.

However, in contradiction to these claims, the relief camps set up by the district administration are marred with shortage of food, medical assistance and shelter. Speaking to India Today, people housed in these camps said they do not have adequate shelter and are dependent on the few food packets tht are occasionally distributed by NGOs.

In Kanpur, the water level of Ganga has breached the danger mark, resulting in flood-like situation. "Nearly 4,000 people have been affected and nearly 1,000 have been shifted to relief shelters," Flood Relief Officer Virag Kumar said.

Besides the rainfall in Uttar Pradesh, the incessant rain in Uttarakhand and Nepal over the past week has also contributed to the floods. Rivers originating in Uttarakhand have swelled up and all of them flow into Uttar Pradesh.
